Perlaki expands his kaleidoscopic practice into deeper forays within abstraction, process and the unconscious.
Beginning from a place of self-reflection and analysis of family dynamics, Hungarian artist Perlaki’s work gradually dissolved into circles of ever-widening dimensions, encompassing drawing, collage, photograms and chance, freed from direct representation.
At once a rumination and desire to dissolve boundaries between finished photographic works and the processes of their creation, the title Both Eyes Open refers to Perlaki’s blindness within the darkroom, to cameraless methods creating shapes and forms that elide categorisation, and to his embracing of the relationship between intention and accident. Both Eyes Open is both an exploration of artistic curiosity and process, coupled with an interest in the similarities and connections between abstraction and representation.
