with an afterword by Gregory Crewdson

“As anyone who has experienced the unsettling effects of sudden trauma can understand, reality never feels ‘real’ in the same way again. In October 2012, Hurricane Sandy ripped through Michael’s hometown, a small suburb on the coast of New Jersey. While he was relieved to find that his childhood home was spared, the surrounding town was torn apart, and his sense of childhood, memory, and family became skewed and disjointed in the wreckage of the storm. Struggling with how to make sense of these feelings of alienation and loss, Michael became fascinated with the notion that the hurricane might have unlocked a hole in space and time, creating a tangible alternate reality over the wreckage and his family. Employing various conventions of the beloved horror and B-movies of his youth — self-consciously lowend special effects and garish, technicolor lighting — the materials of the domestic and familial are reconfigured into an uncanny, alien world.” —Gregory Crewdson
